Brandeis is a Boston suburb located in the northeast corner of Waltham MA. Brandeis was developed by Frederick Lothrop Ames, Jr., son and grandson of two prominent railroad barons.

In 1891 he purchased what had been known up to that point as “the old mill” from his father’s estate for $18,500 with intentions of developing it into “a suburban paradise.” The area where Ames Road crosses Elm Street has since become known locally as ‘The Junction’. It marked the end of streetcar service on Ames Avenue and became an important commercial node which now includes many diverse shops .
