-The city was originally founded on the same site as Elizabeth in 1666 by Puritans from New Haven Colony, under the auspices of Sir George Carteret and Lord Berkeley of Stratton. The name “Newark” derives from these two words: new + market (thus referring to a place with ample grazing or “new meadow”). It is believed that it was named for either Francis Rawdon-Hastings, baron Hastings of Abershawe who at one time owned land in Newark; or Colonel Robert Treat Paine (1631?–1703) who had been commandant during British occupation earlier in year 1776 but fell out with Governor William Franklin after he refused to raise troops for British army against rebels.

-Newark was a bustling city in the 1960s, home to numerous companies and factories. It boasted over 80 department stores as well as Sears & Roebuck; both had downtown retail outlet buildings at their peak. A major fire on July 14th 1967 started when an oil storage tank exploded near Broad Street. The blast could be heard from miles away, breaking glass blocks out of windows up to two miles (three kilometers) away from the explosion site where flaming balls of gas rolled down street sewers amidst debris flying through the air. Afterward, it took nearly six hours for firefighters to put out fires that were set off by ruptured natural gas lines which lit everything they touched ablaze with unrelenting flames reaching heights of up to 100 feet (30 meters).
