East Orange was originally part of Newark Township, which was established in 1667. East Orange first broke away from the township as a separate borough on March 23, 1870. It became fully independent and adopted its current name within days of breaking off from Newark Township when it acquired a city government under an act passed by the New Jersey Legislature April 17, 1887.[15] The town’s oldest section is known as “The Hill.”

A good number of restaurants can be found here so if you’re looking for a place to eat, you won’t be disappointed.
East Jersey Old Town Hall is located in the Downtown area of East Orange and was originally built as an opera house on February 12, 1868. The building hosted its first meeting July 19, 1888. It now houses city government offices and council chambers while hosting community events such as theatrical performances or concerts from time-to-time.
