It became fully independent and adopted its current name within days of breaking off from Newark Township when it acquired a city government under an act passed by the New Jersey Legislature April 17, 1887.[15] The town’s oldest section is known as “The Hill.”

East Jersey Old Town Hall is located in the Downtown area of East Orange and was originally built as an opera house on February 12, 1868. The building hosted its first meeting July 19, 1888. It now houses city government offices and council chambers while hosting community events such as theatrical performances or concerts from time-to-time.
