Foresthill is a neighborhood in Newark, New Jersey. It was originally known as Forest Hills and the name was changed due to confusion with other neighborhoods named “Woodland” or “Foreston.” The area has gone through many phases of development since its original conception in 1905. In 1923 it became an upscale residential community for those looking to move uptown from downtown Newark which had developed into slums at this time.

This eventually led to overcrowding and increase in crime rates by 1980s when new residents moved out because of these conditions. At this point, there were no longer single-family homes available but concentrated projects that followed all low-income housing policies such as Section Eight subsidies provided by HUD’s Housing Authority. There are now multiple residential buildings like The Village at Forest Hill, which was built in 2005 and is subsidized by the Newark Housing Authority.
Today, Foresthill is a diverse neighborhood with the new generation of residents and more opportunities.
