In the 1800s, Saugus was an agricultural community with large apple and peach orchards. It wasn’t until the early 1900s when families from Boston began to migrate to Lynnhurst because they were attracted by its rural landscape. Residents of this Saugus neighborhood still have a strong sense of community as they unconditionally support one another and their neighbors.
The first settlers of LynnHurst said that apples originated in America and while there are other places where apple trees grow, no place has such beautiful ones like those found here. The fruit is so prolific now that it’s been discovered hybridizing produces better tasting apples than cross-pollinating varieties which mostly exist for marketing purposes only today–a fact about which locals are very proud.
– The first school was built in Lynnhurst on Cabot Street and its name was the Saugus Union Free School, which is now known as the Maplewood Memorial Elementary School.
In 1891 a new high school called Fiske High opened near Route One (today’s route 114) to accommodate students from this area of town who had been attending classes at North Middleton when they were overcrowded. This building still stands today because it became an elementary school for grades K through sixes after newer facilities replaced it over time–Fiske has since become one of three city elementary schools that serve prekindergarteners too, providing a place where younger children can learn alongside their older classmates with socialization skills and academic readiness in mind.
– In addition, Fiske is one of two elementary schools that offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) program for its students in grades five through eight–the other is called Center School on Pine Street which now also has a prekindergarten and an extended day care center.
In summary: Lynnhurst was originally settled by hard working families from Boston who were attracted to Saugus’ rural landscape with beautiful apple orchards. They built many wonderful homes here including some of the most expensive ones found anywhere today because it’s so close to Boston yet offers such privacy not available elsewhere.
